New Delhi: Two youths on a motorcycle died after the rider reportedly lost control on an elevated loop connecting Ring Road to Wazirabad in north Delhi at 9 pm on Sunday.
TOI visited the spot near Majlis Park Metro Station on Monday and found that the loop is sharply curved and has a noticeable change in elevation — which can make it challenging for vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, to navigate it safely.
“The motorcycle may have skidded at high speed at a turn and possibly hit the divider, causing
Saif Ali (20), a resident of Burari, and Shahid (18), from Bawana’s JJ Colony, to lose balance and suffer fatal injuries,” a senior police officer said, adding that the two were allegedly not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
By the time a team of cops rushed to the spot, passers-by had taken both to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The stretch runs above the open Bhalswa drain. Locals pointed out that the low height of the sole barrier along the loop adds to the risk in case a driver loses control or skids suddenly, especially at night.
Saif, who was riding the motorcycle, had received it as a gift from his father two years ago. “My son and I would often discuss starting a new business together. He was fond of his his motorcycle and would often post videos of him with it on social media,” a devastated Idris (42), a factory worker, said outside the hospital mortuary on Monday.
Shahid, Saif’s friend, was riding pillion. Shahid’s mother Ruby said, “My husband passed away five years ago. Since then, we have had no one supporting us. Shahid didn’t have any money to continue his education. He was training himself to be a motor mechanic so that he could start earning soon. Now, my two daughters and I have been left in the lurch.”
Police said no eyewitnesses have come forward so far, either at the spot of the accident or in the hospital.
A case was registered under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (death due to negligence) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on initial findings. Further investigations were handed over to the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal Cell of Delhi outer north district.
